NHIAA Field Hockey Playoffs Roundup: Souhegan tips Goffstown
Junior Devon Hickey scored 3 minutes into overtime, lifting host and No. 6 seed Souhegan of Amherst to a 2-1 win against No. 11 Goffstown in Wednesday’s Division II field hockey first round tournament match.
Hickey scored ended the match in the extra frame’s third minute. A shot into the circle hit the post, and the ball died in front of the cage.
“She pulled it off the post and scooped it in,” Souhegan coach Kelli Warecki said.
Hickey also staked Souhegan (10-5) to an early lead. She settled a pass from the midline and fired on goal.
Goffstown (6-8-1) tied the contest at the 55-minute mark. Tori Florence tallied in transition.
Goaltender Bry Fournier made nine saves for the Grizzlies. Morgan Chamberlain made 19 stops for the Sabers.
Kennett 2, Kingswood 0: At Conway, Vonde Saunders snapped a scoreless Division II final-round matchup with less than 13 minutes remaining in regulation, and Aimee-Kate Gutouiski added insurance shortly thereafter.
“My goalkeeper was huge,” Kingswood coach Kaitlyn Reilly said off hard-luck stopper Jessica Colpoys, who finished with 12 saves. “In the second half, we came on strong. We got seven shots on goal. But (Kennett) had eight penalty corners.”
Merrimack Valley 3, ConVal 0: At Penacook, Lily Davis, Cassidy Huckins and Bekka Donovan scored for the Pride, and goalie Kerry Sedion made three saves.
“We started off slow. We got better as the game progressed,” MV coach Kim Kenney said. “We know on Saturday we’ve got to start strong and maintain it the whole game.”
Hollis/Brookline 1, Plymouth 0 (ot): At Plymouth, cousins Sydney and Hannah MacLeod teamed to tally the game’s lone goal early in overtime, resulting in an upset Division II first-round win for the No. 10 Cavaliers.
“There was a scrum in the middle of the field. Hannah was playing on the left side, the ball was crossed from right to left. Hannah put it back to the middle and Sydney finished,” H/B coach Tim Glover said.
Goalies Rachel Dunn and Ashley Skey combined for 11 saves. Skey played the second half and OT, and made two key stops in the extra period that kept Hollis/Brookline (7-6-2) alive.
