Quarterback Tyler Ford scored on a 1-yard run with 10 minutes to play and it proved to be the difference as Division III Souhegan High School posted a 35-28 victory over Division I Manchester Central at Gill Stadium on Saturday night.
The game began in Amherst on Friday night, but after a lightning delay late in the first quarter the scoreless contest was postponed because of dangerous playing conditions and moved to Gill Stadium, which has a turf field.
Souhegan, No. 9 in the Union Leader/WGIR/WMUR Power Poll, led 21-20 at halftime, and took advantage of a Central fumble early in the third to increase that lead to 28-20. No. 6 Central tied the game by scoring a touchdown and adding the two-point conversion with 10 minutes to play, but the Sabers responded with a scoring drive capped by Ford's TD run.
Souhegan stretched its winning streak to seven games and improved to 7-1 overall. Central fell to 5-3 overall.
Division I
Exeter 38, Londonderry 14: At Londonderry, Exeter scored 31 first-half points and improved its record to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in Division II.
Galen Antolino scored twice for the Blue Hawks, who also received TDs from Jamie Vogt, Jay Inzenga and halfback/defensive back Tyler Grant. Grant's TD came on a 48-yard interception return.
The loss dropped Londonderry's record to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in Division I.
Pinkerton 42, Concord 21: At Concord, the Astros scored the game's first 21 points and extended their winning streak to six games.
Pinkerton raised its record to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in Division I. Concord, which has lost three of its last four games, slipped to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the division.
Division II
Bishop Guertin 24, Spaulding 16: At Rochester, Bishop Guertin's C.J. Boykin scored two third-quarter touchdowns to help the Cardinals overcome a six-point halftime deficit and improve to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in Division II.
Spaulding led 9-3 entering the third, but Boykin's two touchdowns handed BG a 17-9 lead. BG extended its lead to 24-9 on Anthony Reali's touchdown.
Spaulding pulled within eight points when Trey Scott scored with 1:57 to play. Scott gained 145 yards on 26 carries. The loss dropped Spaulding's record to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in Division II.
Winnacunnet 7, Timberlane 0: At Hampton, Winnacunnet received a 10-yard touchdown pass from Ing Hao Veasna with three minutes left in the first half and hung on to raise its record to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the division.
Timberlane fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the division.
Dover 40, Merrimack 0: At Merrimack, quarterback Derek Stegman ran for a 5-yard touchdown and threw a 69-yard TD pass to Cam Rewucki as Dover improved to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in Division II.
Eric Waddington (2-yard run), Colin Shaughnessy (25-yard run), Noah Boucher (41-yard run) and Dwayne Gordon (38-yard run) also scored for the Green Wave, Merrimack dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in Division II.
Division III
Con-Val 47, Merrimack Valley 0: At Peterborough, Jeremy Doubleday rushed for 195 yards and a touchdown, and Chris Queen ran for 140 yards and three scores as Con-Val posted a 47-0 victory over Merrimack Valley on Thursday night.
Con-Val, which led 27-0 at halftime, rushed for 381 yards as a team.
Con-Val was coming off a 24-7 triumph over Hollis-Brookline last weekend. The victory improved the Cougars' Division III record to 3-5.
The loss dropped Merrimack Valley's record to 0-8.
Division V
Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough 25, Epping-Newmarket 20: At Epping, Brandon Carelton ran for 240 yards and two touchdowns, but the Blue Devils dropped to 1-6. Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough, which led 20-7 at halftime, raised its record to 1-6.
Division VI
Newport 27, Farmington-Nute 8: At Newport, fullback Matt Tremblay ran for two touchdowns to help the Tigers raise their Division VI record to 3-4.
Newport also scored on a 14-yard pass from Tom Hogan to Zach Whalen, and a 42-yard interception return by Tyler Robertson. The loss dropped Farmington-Nute to 1-6.
Bishop Brady 31, Winnisquam 0: At Concord, Matt Tetu rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries as the Green Giants improved to 5-3 and kept their playoff hopes alive.
Winnisquam, which fell to 5-3, was held to 104 yards of offense. The Bears are also 5-3.
