NHIAA Football: Lenahan's 342nd win ties New England mark established by Wotton
There wasn't much drama in the Plymouth Regional High School football team's 38-0 triumph over St. Thomas on Saturday in Plymouth, but it was a special win for Plymouth coach Chuck Lenahan nonetheless.
It was career victory No. 342 for Lenahan, who is now tied with former St. Thomas of Dover coach Ron Wotton for most career victories by a New England high school football coach.
“It's kind of ironic to do it against St. Thomas,” Lenahan said. “It's quite a milestone to tie that man.”
Lenahan is in his 43rd season as Plymouth's head coach. He owns a career record of 342-69-1, and can break the record when Plymouth plays John Stark at home Saturday.
Wotton retired after the 2010 season with a record of 342-81-3. He was 111-43-0 during his 15 seasons with St. Thomas, and also coached at South Berwick (Maine) High School and Marshwood High School (Eliot, Maine).
Saturday's win improved Plymouth's Division IV record to 8-0. The Bobcats, who are the only undefeated team in the state, will be the top seed in the Division IV playoffs.
Junior quarterback Collin Sullivan completed 4 of 6 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns. Plymouth also received 106 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 11 carries from Brandon Goodale, and 105 yards on eight carries from John Thomas.
St. Thomas, which trailed 35-0 at halftime, dropped to 5-3.
“Continuity had a lot to do with it,” Lenahan said. “I've had a great coaching staff and great kids. The kids who come through this program are just outstanding.
“We haven't done much about it (the milestone). Right now I'm worried about the team. We still have games to play.”
