College sports roundup: No. 15 SNHU stunned in men's soccer

Andres Torres scored with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime as visiting University of New Haven shocked No. 15 Southern New Hampshire University, 2-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer match in Manchester Saturday.

The loss dropped the Penmen to 12-3 overall and 8-3 in the league. New Haven is 6-8-1 and 3-7-1.

SNHU took a 1-0 lead at the 78:02 mark as a shot by Jordan Branco was initially stopped before Kenny Doublette corralled the rebound and put it home for his third goal of the season.

Undaunted, the Chargers tied the game 1:07 later as Oskar Sewerin headed in a left-to-right corner kick off the foot of Clancy Purcell.

The Penmen enjoyed a 33-6 shot advantage in the match.

New Hampshire 0, Vermont 0 (2 OT): At Burlington, Vt., the Wildcats had several opportunites to score but failed the find the back of the net. Aaron Smith of Loudon sent a shot just high of the net and Jordan Thomas, who had three shots, missed one just wide of the net. UNH outshot its foe, 8-7, and UNH keeper Travis Worra made three stops in the match.

The draw puts the Wildcats at 5-6-4 overall and 1-2-2 in America East Conference play. The Catamounts record sits at 6-4-5 and 3-0-2.

Keene State 1, UMass-Dartmouth 0 (OT): At North Dartmouth, Mass., Kyle Leavitt broke a scoreless tie just 22 seconds into overtime in a key LEC contest. The win assures the Owls (9-6-1, 4-11) a spot in the upcoming four-team conference tournament.

Franklin Pierce 2, Assumption 2 (2 OT): At Worcester, Mass., Gareth Dudney scored a late goal as the Ravens staved off a loss and forced the draw. FPU is 7-2-2 in the NE-10.

Men's hockey

Dartmouth 2, McGill 1: At Hanover, Eric Neiley scored a power-play goal with 7:53 remaining in the third period in the Big Green’s preseason opener. Tyler Sikura also scored. Dartmouth outshot the Redmen, 42-18, in the game.

Mens cross country

NE-10 Championshps: At Jamesville, N.Y., Colton Ham of Webster finished the 8K race 19th in a time of 26:22.4 to help Franklin Pierce to ninth place in the 16-team field. T.J. Trujillo of Derry and Isaac Fithian of Kingston were also FPU scoring runners. Kevin Morse finished 58th for 14th place St. Anselm. Garrett Hammond’s 87th-place run paced Southern New Hamphire which finished 16th.

Women's Hockey

UNH 4, Boston College 3:Alexis Crossley scored a pair of goals including the game-winner on a power play at 9:53 of the third period and the University of New Hampshire upset fourth-ranked Boston College, 4-3, in ice hockey at the Whittemore Center in Durham Saturday.

The win improved the Wildcats to 3-1-0 in the young season and 1-1-0 in Hockey East. The Eagles are 0-2-0 on the year and in the conference.

Crossley scored the game’s initial goal before BC grabbed a 3-1 lead seven minutes into the second period.

UNH, however, rallied with goals from Kristin Horn and Sara Carlson to level the score at 3-3, setting the stage for Crossley’s decisive tally.

Goalie Vilma Vaattovaara earned her third win of the season.

Women's Soccer

Keene State 3, UMass-Dartmouth 2 (2OT): At Keene, Amber Pelletier’s goal 5:23 into overtime gave KSC its stunning triumph. Earlier, with time dwindling during regulation and KSC trailing 2-1, Lee’s Kara Pavlidis tied the match to force the overtime. Keene, 4-2 in the LEC, led 1-0 on Hayley Kenyon’s team-leading 12th goal of the season.

AIC 1, SNHU 0: At Manchester, Allie Fitzsimmon’s first half goal snapped the Penmen’s seven-game unbeaten streak and leaves them 7-4-3 in the Northeast-10.

Rivier 6, Pine Manor 1: At Nashua, Paxton LaRocque of Londonderry scored twice while Jillian Pilotte, also of Londonderry, and Sarah Brown of Barnstead tallied once.

St. Anselm 5, Assumption 2: At Goffstown, Kaitlin Oldfield of Epping scored three goals, giving her 10 on the season, as the Hawks improved to 5-7-4 overall (4-6-4 NE-10).

Franklin Pierce 2, Pace 1: At Rindge, freshman forward Hannah Weagle was the catalyst for the Ravens (9-5-2 overall, 8-5-1 NE-10) with a goal and assist. Talita Pereira also tallied.

Dartmouth 1, Columbia 0: At New York, N.Y., Tasha Wilkins snapped a scoreless tie after 65 minutes. The Big Green (11-4-0 overall, 4-1-0 Ivy League) won their fifth straight match.

Field hockey

Assumption 3, Franklin Pierce 2: At Worcester, Sarah Frahm of Salem scored with 39.7 left in overtime to lift the Hounds. Scoring for FPU were Chanelle Letarte and Jessica Rogers.

R.I. College 3, Plymouth St. 1: At Plymouth, Cassie Graham scored for the Panthers (2-13) in the 65th minute on an assist from Epsom’s Molly Todd.

UMass Lowell 4, AIC 0: At Lowell, Mass., freshman Jenna Freitas scored two goals, helping the River Hawks improve t0 15-3.

UMass-Dartmouth 3, Keene St. 1: At North Dartmouth, Mass., sophomore Marisa Lemoine of Berlin her 11th goal of the season for the Owls (11-7, 8-2 LEC).

Women's Volleyball

St. Anselm 3, Assumption 2: At Goffstown, Vivian Fitzgerald led the Hawks (8-10, 4-4 NE-10) with 12 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. Salem’s Melissa Ouellet added nine kills, and Rochester’s Shannon Douglas notched nine kills and three digs.

Daniel Webster 3, Gordon 2: At Nashua, Jennifer Finneran of Barnstead and Samantha Hill of Hudson helped the Eagles (13-8) erase a 2-1 match deficit.

New Haven 3, Southern New Hampshire 0: At Manchester, Erica Solomon had a match-high 14 kills in the setback. The Penmen are 1-6 in the NE-10.

Rivier: At Nashua, the Raiders upped their GNAC record to 10-1 with a pair of 3-1 victories over Mount Ida and Simmons. Kenna Finlayson of Derry managed 35 kills.

Women's cross country

NE-10 Championships: At Jamesville, N.Y., Madeline Hayes (20:07) finished 34th overall to pace Southern New Hampshire which ended 13th in the 16-team field. Erika Pakalnis placed 52nd for St. Anselm, which finished 11th.

Women's swimming

UNH 186, Vermont 114: At Burlington, Vt., junior Jenni Roberts broke a pool record in the 200 IM (2 minutes, 6.21 seconds). It was one of four first-place finishes she celebrated, three of which were individual. She placed first in the 200 freestyle, 100 free and 400 free relay.

Women's tennis

Colby-Sawyer 5, Castleton St. 0: At Hanover, the Chargers (16-2) won the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division Championship. Claire Toffey earned her program-record 55th career doubles win.
