Hospital executives, Wieczorek to be honored for lifetime achievement

Two hospital executives and a former Manchester mayor will be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Business and Industry Association at the BIA’s 99th annual Dinner and Awards Celebration on Wednesday.

The association will also honor the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits with the 2012 New Hampshire Advantage Award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to business leaders who have helped shape their local communities and the state through business endeavors, participation in civic and town organizations, involvement in boards, and service to local and state government, according to the BIA.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock chief executives James Varnum and John Collins and Executive Councilor Ray Wieczorek are this year’s honorees.

Varnum served as president of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital from 1978 to 2006. He guided the medical center through dramatic change, including creation of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Alliance, formation of the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of N.H. and Vt., construction and expansion of a 225-acre medical campus in Lebanon and creation of two regional cancer treatment centers.

As CEO of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic from 1975 to 2007, Collins oversaw creation of a comprehensive network of clinics throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. He led the acquisition of the Matthew Thornton Health Plan, invested Dartmouth-Hitchcock in the Vermont Health Plan and created the self-insured Dartmouth-Hitchcock professional liability program.

He continues to serve as chair and president of Hamden RRG and Hamden Assurance Company.

Wieczorek is the founder of Wieczorek Insurance and has been in business for 48 years. In 1989, he was elected mayor of Manchester and served five terms. During his tenure, Manchester underwent a significant transformation, including the expansion of the regional airport, the opening of the Verizon Wireless Arena and the revitalization of the Millyard and downtown.

He has served as executive councilor in District 4 for the past 11 years.

Established in 2006, the New Hampshire Advantage Award honors businesses, organizations or projects that enhance New Hampshire’s special character and quality of life in meaningful ways.

This year’s honoree, the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits, provides a variety of programs and resources that support New Hampshire’s nonprofit sector.

In 2012, the center launched NonprofitNext.org, a platform offering resources, tools, online training and cost savings on products for nonprofits. NonprofitNext signed on more than 1,000 users during its first year.

The website offers a breadth of news, resources, funding alerts, legislative news and more, with site traffic that averages more than 52,000 page views a month.

Tickets for the BIA’s 99th annual Dinner and Awards Celebration, scheduled from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Center of New Hampshire, are $1,000 for a table of 10 or $110 per person and can be purchased online at BIAofNH.com. For more information, call 224-5388, ext.116.
