Belmont man accused of trying to cash stolen check

JASON MACLEOD

MANCHESTER — A man police say tried to cash a stolen check at Hannaford supermarket in Bedford was caught by two Bedford police officers in the parking lot at the nearby Subaru dealership on Second Street in the city.

According to a news release, Bedford Lt. Michael Griswold was checking the area around Hannaford's at Colby Court in Bedford after receiving a report that a man, identified by police as Jason MacLeod, 32, of 10 Range Road, Belmont, tried to cash a stolen check at the supermarket.

Griswold spotted MacLeod in the parking at Manchester Subaru, 264 Second St., just down the street from Hannaford's, and saw him throw something underneath a parked vehicle.

Griswold went to the dealership and tried to talk with MacLeod, who police say started to run. Griswold caught up to and struggled with him. Bedford police officer Amy Champagne arrived and helped subdue and handcuff MacLeod.

A checkbook, reported stolen earlier in the day from a vehicle parked on Sheridan Street, was recovered from underneath a vehicle parked in the dealership lot.

MacLeod is charged with receiving stolen property, falsifying physical evidence and resisting arrest. The stolen property charge is a felony because MacLeod has past theft convictions, police said.

MacLeod could enter no plea to the felonies Tuesday morning in 9th Circuit Court, Manchester District Division, so a probable cause hearing was set for Nov. 6. Trial on the misdemeanor was set for Jan. 22, 2013. Bail was set at $6,000 cash/surety, with conditions barring contact with the checkbook owner.

MacLeod had also been scheduled to appear at the regular court session on charges of disorderly conduct, operating after suspension and failure to use turn signals, for which he had previously failed to appear. Trial on those charges was added to the Jan. 22, 2013, trial schedule.
