Fisk charged with DUI in Illinois cornfield

Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk, a New Hampshire native, is seen in his booking photo after he was arrested by New Lenox, Ill., police and charge with driving under the influence Monday night, 37 years to the day after his historic home run in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. (COURTESY)

Thirty-seven years ago, Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk belted one of the most famous home runs in baseball history, beating the Reds in Game of 6 of the World Series.

On Monday night, Fisk was charged with DUI in New Lenox, Ill., after the Hall of Famer was found asleep at the wheel in a cornfield, according to police. Paramedics awakened the 64-year-old old, and he was taken to a hospital. He refused a blood alcohol test, and his F-150 pickup truck was impounded, according to the report. Police also said an open vodka bottle was found in the vehicle.

“Around 7:20 (Monday) night, we received a couple of calls about a vehicle in a field,” Deputy Chief Bob Pawlisz told ESPNChicago.com. “When officers went over there, they found Mr. Fisk unconscious behind the wheel ... They contacted local paramedics in New Lenox, had him examined, and the officers had reason to believe he was under the influence. He was transported to the local hospital and charged with a lane violation, driving under the influence and illegal transportation of alcohol. An open container of alcohol was found in the vehicle.”

Fisk, released after posting bond, is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 29.

The Charlestown native was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000. In the 1975, Fisk supplied the signature moment of the World Series, rocketing a 12th-inning home run off the left-field foul pole to beat the Reds in Game 6.
