Derry schools to set strategy in motion
DERRY — There is now a plan in place for the plan.
The school board’s strategic planning committee has begun the process of implementing the district’s long-range strategic plan that it approved this summer.
Over the coming months, the board’s various subcommittees will be looking at the areas of the strategic plan they can best address, according to school board member Dan McKenna.
“We are sending out those goals to all the committees and asking them to look at all the goals to see which ones they can make progress on,” said McKenna.
The three major goals addressed in the strategic plan focus on having all students learn at a higher level, providing a safe and positive learning environment, and increasing community involvement. Each of the three goals include a number of action items.
For the goal of having all students achieve at a higher level, some of the action items include having high quality teachers in each classroom and integrating technology throughout the curriculum.
School board member Ken Linehan has stated the goal also establishes that the district will continue to work closely with Pinkerton Academy and all other high school facilities to support all learners from kindergarten through graduation.
For the goal of providing a safe and positive atmosphere, the plan calls for making sure all school facilities are well maintained and that the building structures support the implementation of technology into the schools.
The district also needs to continue to look at opportunities to engage with the wider Derry community, according to Linehan.
Sometime at the end of January or beginning of February, the various subcommittees will report back to the strategic planning committee with the goals they plan to work on through the end of the school year, according to McKenna.
“We can then work on the action steps to make progress towards those goals,” he said.
Some of the goals may involve implementing long-term projects, while others may only necessitate a short-term action plan to make the goal a reality.
