Artists to show off skills during Art in Action festival
LONDONDERRY — Art lovers of all ages will be able to witness the creative process firsthand next week, with the return of Art in Action.
More than just an art exhibit, guests of Art in Action are encouraged to interact with the artists as they work on their latest creations, ranging from traditional oils and acrylics to printmaking, colored pencil renderings, mixed media and more.
The free event, to be held Saturday, Nov. 3, and Sunday, Nov. 4, at Mack’s Apples Farm Stand and Shady Hill Greenhouses, both on Mammoth Road, is being sponsored by the Londonderry Arts Council and offers an up-close glimpse of the art-making process, allowing artists to show off their skills to the public as they demonstrate techniques in oils, pastels, watercolors, pen and ink and colored pencil.
Guest will also have the chance to purchase original works of art and art prints as they browse through both locations, open both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Next week’s festivities will mark the launch of a new addition to Art in Action: an outreach program for young artists.
“The ideas is to promote emerging artists,” said event spokesman Jason Williams, a Londonderry sculptor and mixed media/oils artist.
For the first time ever, the event will feature a student artist who will be given the opportunity to experience professional participation in the art show.
Londonderry High School sophomore Dean Sheldon, who specializes in watercolor painting, is being mentored by Williams, who will accompany him in his appearance at Art in Action.
Sheldon began painting while a freshman under the guidance of his art teacher Mimi Johnson. Since then, he’s created more than 60 paintings and hopes to one day pursue a career in the arts.
The Art in Action event will also feature the works of Derry artists Debbie Curtin, Corrine Dodge, Susan Monty and John Sweeney; East Kingston’s Heather Crowley; Londonderry’s Tom Abruzese, Susan Hanna and Barbara Scott; New Boston’s Hanna Phelps; Tina Gagnon of Salem; Patricia Crowley of Windham; and Hiltrud Bennet of Pepperell, Mass.
