NHIAA Roundup: St. Thomas boys top Trinity
Simon Smith’s first varsity goal in the 53rd minute proved to be the game-winner for 12th-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover (7-7-3) in a 2-1 upset of fifth-ranked Trinity of Manchester (11-6) in a Division II boys’ soccer preliminary round playoff game in Manchester on Thursday.
Bryan King also scored and Ben Mardin had five saves for the Saints.
Division II
Portsmouth 2, ConVal 1: At Peterborough, Shawn Swift’s goal midway through the second half lifted No. 9 Portsmouth over No. 8 ConVal of Peterborough. Colin Siverts also scored for the Clippers (8-7-2). Harrison LeFlem made several big saves for ConVal (8-7-2).
Coe-Brown 2, Souhegan 1: Dewey Fonjoy scored in the 94th minute as 10th-ranked Coe-Brown of Northwood (9-8) upset seventh-ranked Souhegan of Amherst (8-6-3) on the road in overtime. Jake Lawrence gave Souhegan a 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the game. Coe-Brown’s Spencer Nowland tied the game a minute later. Nate Hendrickson had six saves for the winners.
Division I
Winnacunnet 1, Nashua North 0 (OT): Jack Haight scored off a throw-in 17 minutes into sudden-death overtime to lift fifth-ranked Winnacunnet past 12th-seeded Nashua North in Hampton. Mark Caunter saved seven for the Warriors. Tim Closson had 13 saves and backs Cam Motivala and Andrei Junkgman impressed on defense for Nashua North.
Exeter 2, Alvirne 0: At Exeter, seventh-ranked Exeter won a physical battle with 10th-ranked Alvirne of Hudson as Alex Peck and Austin Kimball scored for the Blue Hawks (12-5). Exeter goalie Tom Wolters, who suffered a gash on his forehead, left the game in the first half. Wolters and Ben Cresitello-Dittmar combined for four saves in the shutout.
Hanover 3, Salem 0: At Hanover, the Marauders erupted with three goals in the second half as Xavier Tschana, Ian Strohbehn and Jonas Taenzer all scored within five minutes. Third-ranked Hanover won its eighth straight and improved to 15-2. Salem’s Andrew Zani made 14 saves as the Blue Devils dropped to 5-11-1.
Londonderry 5, Dover 1: At Londonderry, Rob Hart and Alex Hall scored 85 seconds apart to spark the Lancers in opening-round play. Hart, Austin Lockwood and Anthony Ferrara added goals in the second half for Londonderry (15-2). Aaron Esparza scored for Dover (7-8-2).
Central 3, Bishop Guertin 0: At Manchester, Keegan Laberge snapped a scoreless game in the 33rd minute and added the final goal as host Manchester Central (12-4-1) opened the playoffs with a shutout. Sam Binogono added a goal and Noah Edmunds made two saves in net. Alvirne of Hudson ended the year at 5-11-1.
Timberlane 2, Keene 1: Tyler Donovan and Gunnar Ericsson scored for eighth-ranked Timberlane of Plaistow (8-5-3) in a come-from-behind victory against ninth-ranked Keene (9-7). Ben Stein scored in the eighth minute to account for Keene’s lone goal against Timberlane goalie Tom Sullivan, who finished with six saves.
Bedford 2, Manchester Memorial 0: Casey Schehl had a goal and an assist as top-ranked Bedford got by 16th-ranked Manchester Memorial in Bedford. Taylor Wallace recorded an easy shutout with no shots on net. Marco Ibanez also scored for Bedford and Gary Archambault had eight saves for the Crusaders.
Division III
Raymond 4, Berlin 1: At Raymond, sophomore Tucker MacPherson scored his 18th and 19th goals of the season, and the host Rams moved into the quarterfinals. Mike Schillereff and Billy Harmon also scored for Raymond (11-5-1) and Brandon Van Dewalle made 14 saves as the winning keeper. Ryan Richard scored in the 35th minute for Berlin (9-8).
Hopkinton 3, Laconia 1: Doug Fleury scored all three goals for second-ranked Hopkinton (16-1) in a win against 15th-ranked Laconia in Contoocook. Rob Ferguson had two saves to record the victory in net. Patrick Guyer scored for Laconia (7-10).
Division IV
Lisbon 7, Canaan(Vt.)-Pittsburg 1: Chad Knighton scored a hat trick and Derek Roberts added a pair of goals as first-ranked Lisbon (17-0) throttled 16th-ranked Canaan (Vt.)-Pittsburg (2-15).
Sunapee 1, Wilton-Lyndeborough 0: At Sunapee, Kevin Parsons converted on a pass from Sam Emery for the lone goal. Goalie James Fitzgerald made four saves for the third-seeded Lakers (15-2), while Connor Melrose (11 saves) stood tall in goal for the Warriors (5-12).
Derryfield 2, Lin-Wood 0: At Manchester, the game was scoreless until Derryfield School’s Jared Schoneberger scored in the 51st minute. Schoneberger also set up the next goal for Griffin Phaneuf, who beat Lin-Wood of Lincoln goalie Jon Rich. Lucas McCabe made two saves to preserve the shutout for the second-ranked Cougars. Derryfield improved to 15-2, and Lin-Wood dipped to 4-13.
