Man wanted for allegedly assaulting girlfriend on I-93 surrenders after standoff in Danville
DANVILLE - A Danville man who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on the side of Interstate 93 in Londonderry surrendered to police Friday night following a standoff.
Eric J. Labarge, 35, was taken into custody around 6:44 p.m. when he surrendered to members of a State Police SWAT unit at a residence at 13 Christian St.
Authorities began looking for Labarge on Friday morning, after police said he assaulted his girlfriend while they were traveling south on I-93 near Exit 4 in Londonderry.
Two retired firefighters traveling on the highway noticed the assault and pulled over to help the injured woman, police said. An off-duty firefighter also stopped to help.
The firefighters intervened and separated the two before Labarge allegedly took off. Police said the girlfriend was taken to Parkland Medical Center, where she was treated and released.
Police put out a bulletin shortly before 10 a.m. urging area law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for Labarge.
At approximately 12:21 p.m., State Police responded to a home at 19 Wesley Road in Danville to conduct a follow-up investigation related to the assault in Londonderry.
Police said troopers observed a 2003 Saab at the address, which was reported to have been driven by Labarge. Several attempts were made to reach Labarge on a cell phone, but police were unsuccessful.
A State Police SWAT unit responded to the area and Labarge was found inside the home at 13 Christian St., which is a neighbor's residence, police said.
Police said Labarge told the neighbor earlier that he had a fight with his girlfriend and needed a place to rest until a friend picked him up.
The neighbor wasn't harmed in the incident.
After surrendering without incident, Labarge was transported to the Rockingham County jail.
