NHIAA Girls' Soccer playoff roundup: Bedford stops Keene
The Bedford girls soccer team just won’t let its first season in Division I end.
The third-seeded Bulldogs (13-3-2) turned aside No. 11 Keene (7-7-4), 2-0, Saturday in Bedford to advance to the semifinals of the Division I tournament.
They advance to play No. 2 Londonderry in semifinal game Wednesday night at 5:30 at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester. Top-seeded and three-time defending champion Exeter, an easy 5-0 winner over Concord, plays fourth-seeded Manchester Central at 7:30.
“If you asked me before the season, I would have said this would be a stretch,” Bedford coach Michelle Winning said. “Every game, we’ve gotten better and better. They’ve rose to the challenge of Division I.”
Keene goalie Dani Warhall was exceptional, making 11 saves, but Bedford managed a goal in each half. Jessica Joseph headed in an Asha Steele corner kick midway through the first half, while Jenny Mara made it 2-0 nine minutes into the second half off a nice two-pass setup from Johanna Celli and Molly Keefe.
Freshman goalie Brooke Barrett (six saves) recorded her seventh shutout behind and another dominating effort from a backline anchored by Abby Kokkinos.
Londonderry 5, Timberlane 2: At Londonderry, the 10th-seeded Owls (9-9) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but the second-seeded Lancers (16-2) had the answer, scoring five straight goals.
Goals by Rachel Morrier and Erin Sullivan gave Timberlane a 2-0 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the first half. Londonderry got one back a couple of minutes later on a goal by Aliza Simpson and then struck for four more markers in the first 25 minutes of the second half. Kayleen Walberg led the charge, scoring two goals and assisting on another.
Division III
Campbell 5, Monadnock 0: At Litchfield, Casey Mellen and Sydney Crema each scored two goals to pace the third-seeded Cougars (13-4) in a quarterfinal win over the Huskies (10-7). Campbell pulled away with four goals in the second half.
The Cougars face No. 7 Hopkinton in the semifinals Wednesday at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.
Division IV
Sunapee 3, Gorham 0: At Sunapee, Meg Clarenbach and Abby Armstrong each had a goal and an assist as the Lakers (17-0-1) downed Gorham (10-8). Sunapee, which scored all three goals in the first half, plays in the semifinals Wednesday at Merrimack Valley High School.
