NHIAA Football Roundup: Plymouth's Lenahan achieves milestone win
The Plymouth Regional High School football team capped an unbeaten regular season and handed head coach Chuck Lenahan a milestone victory by beating John Stark 35-21 Saturday.
It was career win No. 343 for Lenahan, who has now won more games than any other New England high school football coach (past or present). Lenanan entered the game tied with former St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover coach Rod Wotton, who retired in 2010 with a career record of 342-81-3. Wotton also coached at two high schools in Maine.
“It's certainly a great milestone and a honor to be mentioned along with Rod Wotton,” Lenahan said. “I'm real proud of it, but it's not an individual record, it's a Plymouth record — the coaches and the kids. We're putting it down as a team accomplishment.”
Lenahan has a 343-69-1 record in 43 seasons as Plymouth's head coach.
Plymouth running back Brandon Goodale rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on six carries in the victory. Goodale eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in the first half. The Bobcats also received rushing touchdowns from Jared Kuehl and John Thomas, and a TD catch from Noah Crane. It was 35-0 at halftime.
Plymouth improved to 9-0 and will enter the Division IV playoffs as the only unbeaten team in the state. The Bobcats will be the No. 1 seed and will face fourth-seeded St. Thomas (6-3) in Saturday's semifinals. Plymouth beat St. Thomas 38-0 last weekend.
John Stark completed its season with a 1-8 record.
“We dressed 70 kids and we played all of them,” Lenahan said. “Now we have to prepare for the St. Thomas boys. We can't look past them just because of what happened the last time.”
Division II
