College Sports Roundup: UNH men, women harriers shine

Stony Brook owned the day, but the host school didn’t have too much to complain about Saturday in Durham during the America East cross country championships at the University of New Hampshire.

Stony Brook swept the men’s and women’s team title — the eighth straight for the women and the first ever for the men — while UNH was a close second in each race.

UNH senior Keely Maguire won the women’s race, covering the 5K course in 16:33.48, while teammates Anne Twombly and Laura Rose Donegan wee sixth and 10th, respectively. Also finishing the top 20 for UNH, which finished nine points behind Stony Brook, were sophomore Chelsey Serrano of Manchester (14th) and juniors Darcy James of Exeter (15th) and Cayla Pellegrini of Derry (20th).

The UNH men were seven points behind Stony Brook as senior Cory Sinotte of Manchester battled Stony Brook’s Eric Speakman for the individual title. Sinotte finished second, 11 seconds behind Speakman, clocking a time of 25:22.17 on the 8K course. Junior Joseph Jourdain of Hudson was 18th.

KSC teams dominant at LECs: At Westfield, Mass., the Keene State College women won their 13th straight title, while the KSC men won their 12th overall title during the Little East Conference championships.

In the women’s race, Maggie Fitter was second, while freshman Kaitlin Wheeler of Exeter was sixth and junior Marie Whitney of Jaffrey was seventh.
