Windham schools to reopen Thursday

WINDHAM - Schools were closed for the third day in a row Wednesday, while efforts to restore the town's power remained under way.

On Wednesday morning, PSNH reported that 3,248 of the company's 4,879 customers, or 66 percent, remained in the dark.

Company spokesman Mike Skelton noted that line crews, some traveling from Canada to assist with emergency relief, had worked late through the night Tuesday evening and as of 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, power had been restored to 81,000 of the 137,000 Granite State households that lost power during Monday's hurricane.

Skelton noted, however, that sections of the southern I-93 corridor were hit particularly hard by the hurricane, making it difficult to pinpoint the precise time when all power would be restored.

Liberty Utilities has restored power to the majority of its Windham customers as of Wednesday morning, with just under 200 residents awaiting restoration. By midday, the company reported 83 active outages in town.

Power was restored to Golden Brook School and Windham Middle School on Wednesday morning, according to District Superintendent Henry LaBranche.

While both schools sustained some minor damage during Monday's storm, including several roof leaks, those issues have since been addressed.

LaBranche said the plan is to resume classes Thursday, even though some residents won't likely have their power back by then.

“Our intent is to get things back to normal as soon as possible,” he said.

On Wednesday morning, Windham Police Chief Gerald Lewis announced that this week's trick-or-treat hours, which had originally been scheduled for Halloween evening, have been postponed until Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. due to continued power outages and debris scattered around town.
