NHIAA Tournament Roundup: Nute, Winnisquam advance to volleyball finals
In a pair of shockers, No. 5 Nute of Milton and No. 6 Winnisquam of Tilton surprised their higher seeded opponents and gained Division III girls volleyball semifinal victories at the Foley Gymnasium at Plymouth State University Wednesday.
Nute eliminated top-seeded and previously undefeated Campbell of Litchfield, 3-1, while Winnisquam ousted No. 2 Farmington, 3-1.
Nute and Winnisquam meet for the state title Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Foley gym.
/strong>Nute 3, Campbell 1: After dropping the first match, 16-25, Nute rallied to win three straight by scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-15 to take the match. Alisha Flanagan led the way with a double-double of 13 kills and 14 digs.
Adding to Nute's strong play were Heidi Cloutier with nine kills, Kristina Cherniauskas with 14 digs and Ella Gourlay with seven kills.
Campbell, which finished its season with a 16-1 record, received 14 kills from jayla Brennen, 10 kills and Brianna Hardy and eight kills from Alex Trevains. Hardy served up five aces.
Winnisquam 3, Farmington 1: After spliting the first two games, 25-14 and 24-26, the Bears won the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-12 to earn its berth in the state championship match.
Elyssa Clairmont dished out 35 assists in the match for Winnisquam which improved to 13-4. Hannah Chapin dominated at the net with 18 kills, and she added 10 digs when in defensive mode. Moe Raymond added 12 digs and seven kills.
The Bears last state championship came in 2010.
Farmington, meanwhile, closed its season on a 14-3 record. The Tigers have appeared in three of the past four state title matches, winning last in 2009.
Div. IV soccer
Allison Horne's breakaway goal 35 minutes into the match gave third-seeded Littleton a two-goal advantage and an eventual 2-1 victory over No. 2 Woodsville in the first of two Division IV girls' soccer semifinal matches at Hanover Wednesday.
Littleton's Sydney Pinard and Allison Horne both tallied in the first half to give the Crusaders a two-goal margin at the half.
