CONCORD - The son of New Hampshire Bar Association President Lawrence Vogelman was killed in Brooklyn during Hurricane Sandy.

Jacob Vogelman, 24, was helping a childhood friend reach her cancer-stricken father and walk her dog during the storm about 8 p.m. Monday when several trees came down. The two were pinned under a tree and not discovered until the next morning, according to The New York Times.

Police said Vogelman and Jessie Streich-Kest, 24, were killed instantly. The dog required surgery, but survived.

The two were among at least 40 who died in New York City during the storm and almost 100 whose lives were claimed in eight different states.

Vogelman, who practices in Manchester and lives in Durham, was named president of the bar in June. He has headed

into New York City for his son's funeral and is "overwhelmed," according to Dave Slawsky, Vogelman's partner.

Slawsky drove Vogelman to New York City Wednesday.

"It's a personal tragedy," Slawsky said. "just everybody's worst nightmare."

Jacob "Jake" Vogelman was described as a young man who lived the way he died, helping others. He was studying for his master's degree at City University of New York-Brooklyn College and had attended University of Nevada at Las Vegas and University of Buffalo, according to his LinkedIn account. It also said he was a stage hand at MGM Grand.

Kate Harlow, a longtime friend, said in a blog post that Vogelman was one of her best friends and a "tremendous talent" in the theater.

"His future was so bright," she wrote.

The news accounts from New York indicated that the two were walking "Max" a white pit bull terrier mix on Ditmas

Avenue near East 18th St. when several large hardwoods lining Ditmas Park fell.

Vogelman, 63, of Durham is director of the Manchester law firm Nixon, Vogelman, Barry, Slawsky & Simoneau PA.

Vogelman and his ex-wife Marcia Sikowitz, a New York Housing Court judge, had three sons. Jacob was their eldest. The other two are twin boys, Noah and Jeremiah.

Their father is a well-known criminal defense and civil rights attorney. He worked for 15 years as a professor of law at New York's Cardozo Law School.

Vogelman moved to New Hampshire in 1994 to take a position as litigation director for the New Hampshire Public Defender.

During the summer months, according to Bar News, he underwent heart surgery.
