SNHU soccer teams win NE-10 titles

The Northeast-10 soccer championship title resides this year at Southern New Hampshire University, for both men and women.

In North Andover, Mass, a goal by Mohamed Toufik 4:17 into the second half guided the second-seeded Penmen to a 2-1 win over No. 1 seed Merrimack College for the NE-10 men's championship Sunday.

The Penmen improve to 17-3 overall, while the Warriors (14-3-2) saw a 13-game unbeaten streak snapped.

For SNHU, it marks their fourth NE-10 tournament title since joining the league in 2000, with the other coming in 2000, 2002 and 2008. Both SNHU and Merrimack are expected to earn bids to the NCAA Tournament that kicks off Thursday.

In Manchester, Ashley Jaskula scored midway through the first half and keeper Samantha Whittier posted her third straight shutout as third-seeded SNHU edged No. 8 seed Adelphi 1-0 in the finals of the NE-10 women's championship Sunday. The Penmen (13-5-3) earned an automatic bid to the 48-team NCAA field.

For Southern New Hampshire, it marks its first NE-10 tournament title since joining the league in 2000. SNHU will be making its third NCAA appearance and first since 2003. SNHU becomes just the third school to claim both NE-10 soccer crowns in the same year. Springfield College did it in 1989 while Franklin Pierce achieved the feat in 2006.

In the men's game Sunday, Keegan Campbell and Jordan Branco set-up Toufik, who scored the game-winner in the 50th minute for his seventh season goal. Sam Kelley of Bedford scored the first goal for the Penmen in the 25th minute.

Jaskula scored her ninth season goal to lead the women.
