Conway voters turn out in big numbers
CONWAY – A steady stream of vehicles drove up and down Eagles Way, the mile-long road that leads up to Kennett High School, where Conway voters were exercising their constitutional right.
By 1 p.m., not quite halfway through the polling hours, 2,400 residents had cast their ballots. In the Sept. 11 state primary, 1,442 votes were cast. As of September, there were 6,156 names on the checklist.
"There's been no break at all today," Carolyn Brown, a supervisor of the checklist in Conway, said shortly before 1 p.m. Brown was helping register voters and called the turnout of new voters "awesome."
Ballot official Stacy Sand was sitting by the table under the “NV” sign, where she and a couple of others had the privilege of handing ballots to the new Conway voters – 200 as of early afternoon, not counting those in the long line still unregistered.
The access to the polling site was made easier by SAU 9 scheduling teacher workshops for the day so that the building would be freed up for the presidential voting.
“It works real well for the town,” said Carl Nelson, SAU 9 superintendent, as he surveyed the voting in the school's spacious cafeteria. The voting for other elections takes place at the Conway Community Center, which, as the former Pine Tree Elementary School, has narrower entry points and less elbow room for the functions of voters and election officials, as well as limited parking.
