A quarter of Windham voters have already cast ballots
WINDHAM - Shortly before 11 a.m., it was a full house at Windham High School, where nearly 2500 of the town's 10,000 or so registered voters had already cast their ballots.
Town Moderator Peter Griffin said the majority of residents have cooperated with the new voter ID regulations thus far, and only a small handful had opted to submit voter affidavits.
“I haven't had any complaints yet,” Griffin said. “In fact, people seem to welcome this.”
Town Clerk Nicole Merrill said she planned ahead for this election and enlisted the help of a few extra ballot clerks to make sure things ran smoothly.
“We've seen a lot of new voters out here today,” said Merrill, motioning to the line of around 30 residents waiting to register.
Outside the polls, Jeff Torrice held a Mitt Romney campaign sign attached to a faded American flag. Torrice said he's had the flag for many years. “It has 48 stars on it: that's how old it is,” he noted.
Nearby, David Bates held similar signs and stood next to a television he'd set up, which played a video he'd made urging voters to consider alternatives to the current President.
“I wanted people to see (President Obama's) record. We're in a serious financial crisis,” he said.
Asked if he'd gotten permission to play a video outside the polls, Bates said he'd made sure he was in the permitted campaigning zone, noting, “As far as I know, we still have First Amendment rights.”
“Nobody said I couldn't do it,” he added.
