Dixville Notch voters split their vote just after midnight, casting five votes for President Barack Obama and five for Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

A handful of residents in this remote corner of New Hampshire's northernmost county, Coos, have prided themselves since 1960 on returning the first results to be announced in the nation for presidential voting.

They traditionally cast their ballots within a minute after the polls open, just after midnight on Election Day.

There was a new voting site in Dixville Notch this year, however. With work under way at The Balsams, the now-closed grand hotel in the North Country, voting took place across Route 26 at The Balsams Wilderness Ski Resort.

Dixville Town Clerk Rick Erwin and Town Moderator Tom Tillotson oversaw the process at the lodge, about a mile-and-a-half from the hotel.

In the congressional race, Dixville Notch voters favored Republican Charlie Bass over Ann McLane Kuster 6 to 3, awarding Libertarian Hardy Macia one vote.

In the governor's race, the GOP's Ovide Lamontagne got seven votes to Democrat Maggie Hassan's three.

Hart's Location

The voters of this Crawford Notch town bundled up and came out to town hall to vote at midnight, giving President Obama 23 votes. Republican challenger Mitt Romney received nine votes, Libertarian Gary Johnson one.

Democrat Maggie Hassan got 22 votes in her bid to win the corner office, with Republican candidate Ovide Lamontagne getting the support of nine voters. Libertarian John Babiarz received two votes.

In the congressional race, the GOP's Frank Guinta got nine votes to Democrat Carol Shea-Porter's 23.
