Early results: Hosmer in District 7 race

LACONIA - With early election returns in Tuesday night, it appeared Democrat Andrew Hosmer was headed to victory over Republican Josh Youssef for the newly formed State Senate District 7 seat.

With Belmont results in and all but Laconia's wards 1 and 5 reporting, Hosmer took 2,930 votes to Youssef's 2,078.

Hosmer said Tuesday night he was still looking at the results and "hopefully optimistic."

"I am anxious to be transitioning out of the campaign mode which can be dvisive and difficult and moving into a leadership mode and focusing on things that bind us," he said.

Both sought to represent Franklin, Belmont, Andover, Boscawen, Canterbury, Gilford, Northfield, Salisbury, Laconia, and Webster in the state Senate.

Youssef, 36, of Laconia, won narrowly over Bill Grimm of Franklin in the Republican primary and Hosmer, 48, also of Laconia, was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

The two men have different backgrounds and work experience.

Hosmer currently works at AutoServe of Tilton, an auto dealership that is a family-owned business. He ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 2010 against Republican James Forsythe. Hosmer has a law degree and once worked as a prosecutor in Massachusetts.

Youssef grew up in Laconia where his parents own a dock company in Belmont. He graduated from Laconia High School and attended both Syracuse University and the University of New Hampshire where he started a computer business in his dorm room.

Hosmer said New Hampshire's advantage of being an attractive place to live, start a business and raise a family has been threatened by the current Legislature, a "radical group," which has made higher education unaffordable for many.

Youssef put himself forward as the fiscal conservative in the race who believes government should get out of the way of private enterprise for it to grow.
