Democrat Ann McLane Kuster defeated Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Charles F. Bass in Tuesday's election for the Second Congressional District.

Kuster beat Bass 52 percent to 44 percent, according to election results.

"I am truly humbled by your vote of confidence, and I will do my best to live up to it for as long as I have the privilege of serving New Hampshire," Kuster said in her acceptance speech.

"We all know that's going to take commonsense and compromise. So here's my commitment to you: I will work with anybody, from any party, on any issue if I believe it's in the best interest of our state," she said in her speech. "And I will always stand up for what I believe in."

Bass said by telephone Tuesday night that he was disappointed with the result.

"Obviously, you can't be anything but sad about losing an election," he said. "My view of it is that this is the way the system should work. The voters of this district have spoken and I accept that decision with grace and good cheer."

Bass said he congratulated Kuster on her victory and pledged to make her transition into office a smooth one.

Bass was attempting to win an eighth term in office, having served from 1995 to 2007 and again since being elected in 2010.

Tuesday's election was a rematch against Kuster, whom he defeated in 2010.

He said he wasn't sure if Tuesday's result was a reflection on him or was the result of voter mood swing in party politics.

"It's hard for me to give an answer for that," he said. "I do think there was a general trend toward blue rather than red."
