DERRY - Pinkerton Academy DECA is honoring the memory of former teachers Bill Cofrin and Ralph Van Nostrand with an inaugural 5K memorial run and walk on Veterans Day, Sun. Nov. 11, beginning at 10 a.m.
The run is coordinated by two of Jen Scheffer's Level II Marketing and Business Management students, Michael DeMarco and Nicholas Egan, and is a DECA chapter project that qualifies as a community service event.
"Nicholas jumped on that idea because he was coached by Bill for two years as a member of the lacrosse team," said Scheffer. "Michael was also on board from the start because he felt as though it was a good cause to promote and work toward because of the contributions both Bill and Ralph gave to the Pinkerton Academy community for so many years."
Scheffer said Egan and DeMarco have been enthusiastic and dedicated to planning and organizing the event.
"They reached out to local businesses and received donations for gift baskets for the winners and have worked very hard to promote Sunday's event within the DECA chapter, as well as throughout the entire Pinkerton Academy community," she said.
Cofrin taught Advanced Placement Psychology for 28 years as a member of the social studies department at Pinkerton Academy. He was the head athletic trainer for 11 years and taught and developed the athletic training course offered at the high school. He was the assistant lacrosse coach for 28 years.
Van Nostrand, who died at age 60 in January, was a career education counselor at Pinkerton, and through either coaching or volunteering, he played a large role in the athletic careers of many who played sports in the town of Derry. Among his many achievements, he founded and coached the boys' varsity volleyball team, leading his team to a number of state championships.
Anyone wishing to participate in the memorial run should meet at the Pinkerton football field by 9:45 a.m. for the 10 a.m. race. The registration cost is $10 per person. Entrants are encouraged to wear red and white to show their Pinkerton pride.
DECA is an association of marketing students and is an international organization that provides career preparation opportunities in marketing and business. A major aspect of the organization, in addition to career development, is giving back to the community, according to Scheffer.
"This year, when helping my students decide on a project to pursue, I made the suggestion to coordinate a walk in memory of Bill and Ralph and donate the money raised to each scholarship fund that has been established in each of their names," she said.
