College Sports Roundup: Myrick's double-double lifts UNH men over Dartmouth

Ferg Myrick posted his first career double-double Tuesday to help the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team pull away from Dartmouth College, 72-58, at Leede Arena in Hanover.

The Wildcats (2-0) led by as many as nine points in the first half before the Big Green (1-1) took their one and only lead of the game, 26-25, on a 3-pointer by Kevin Crescenzi with 1:17 left in the first half. Myrick answered with a layup to put UNH back ahead for good.

The senior forward finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Chandler Rhoads and Patrick Konan each finished with 14. Alex Mitola led Dartmouth with 17.

The win was the fifth straight for UNH over Dartmouth, which still holds a 31-30 advantage in the all-time series.

Midnight opener for DWC, Rivier: Insomniacs and basketball fans alike will have something to look forward to tonight when crosstown rivals Daniel Webster College and Rivier kick off the Division III men's basketball season in Nashua. Teams are allowed to start playing Thursday and the Raiders and host Eagles will waste no time, tipping off one minute after midnight.

Women's basketball

BYU 58, Dartmouth 57: At Hanover, the Big Green (1-1) couldn't hold a second-half lead as the Cougars (2-0) put together a late 11-3 run to pull out the win at Leede Arena. Lexi Eaton had a game-high 19 points for BYU, including a conventional three-point play to put the Cougars ahead for good with 1:23 left. Faziah Steen led Dartmouth with 18.

Volleyball

Pace 3, Franklin Pierce 2: At Rindge, the Ravens (19-4) were bounced in the quarterfinals of the NE-10 tournament as the Setters (17-17) avenged a regular-season loss to FPU. Natasha Ray had 14 kills for the Ravens, while Stephanie Svorinic had 54 assists.

Women's hockey

Dartmouth 3, Boston College 3: At Hanover, a pair of third-period goals by Reagan Fischer, including one with 76 left, allowed the Big Green (4-1-1) to rally from 3-1 down Monday and pull out a tie with the fifth-ranked Eagles (4-3-2).

Polls

KSC men picked as LEC favorite: Keene State College topped the Little East Conference men's basketball coaches' poll announced Tuesday. The Owls, who return four of their top five scorers from last year's 19-11 team, collected six of eight first-place votes. Plymouth State was voted seventh among the eight teams. KSC was sixth and PSU was eighth in the women's poll.

Honors

PSU's Stoodley named All-America: Casey Stoodley of Salem capped off her career with the Plymouth State University women's volleyball team by earning honorable mention on the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Division III All-America team. The senior hitter, who ranked second in the Little East Conference in kills per set (4.04), is the first player in PSU's 17-year history to earn All-America honors. She was the only player from the LEC to make the list.

UNH standouts, Dublin's McBrien collect All-Academic honors: Ethan McBrien of Dublin (ConVal), a senior for the University of Vermont men's cross country team, was named to the America East All-Academic team a month after earning all-conference honors. A trio of runners from UNH also earned all-academic honors: junior Joseph Jourdain of Hudson (Alvirne) was named to the men's team, while senior Darcy James of Exeter and junior Anne Twombly of Exeter was named to the women's team.

UNH swimmer takes weekly award: UNH sophomore Katie Mann was named America East women's swimmer of the week after winning four races, including three individual events, during Saturday's win over the University of Rhode Island.

Dartmouth goalie Morris top ECAC goalie: Junior goalie Cab Morris, who has helped the Dartmouth men's hockey team rise to No. 12 in the latest national rankings, was named ECAC goalie of the week after going 2-0 last week, including his first career shutout in a 4-0 win over RPI. Morris ranks among the nationally leaders in goals-against average (1.22).
