Recount keeps GOP majority in Senate

CONCORD - The recount took all day and into the evening, but the result did not change. Republican Andy Sanborn still defeated Democrat Lee Nyquist for the District 9 state Senate seat.

"Thank you everyone who helped with the recount," Sanborn, of Bedford, tweeted Tuesday night. Sanborn declared his victory by a margin of 15,454 votes to 15,241.

Nyquist did pick up more than 40 votes in the town of Mont Vernon, but it was not enough. The results mean Republicans will still hold a 13-11 majority in the state Senate when they are sworn into office Dec. 5.

"Each vote has been counted, more than once, and the voters of that district have spoken - they want Andy Sanborn as their senator," said Wayne MacDonald, New Hampshire Republican State Committee chairman.

The other Senate recount will not take place until Nov. 20, when the District 16 race between incumbent David Boutin, R-Hooksett, and Kathleen Kelley, D-Manchester, is recounted. In that race, 396 votes separate Boutin, the winner, from Kelley.

None of the results from the four House race recounts Tuesday changed the winners.

In Belknap District 3 race representing Laconia, the winners were Republicans Don Flanders, Robert Luther and Frank Tilton, and Democrat David Huot.

In the Hillsborough District 26 race representing Brooklyn, the winners remained Republican Jack B. Flanagan and Democrat Melanie Levesque.

In the Hillsborough 15 race representing Manchester Ward 8, the winners were Republican Steve Vaillancourt and Democrat Thomas Katsiantonis.

And in Hillsborough 36, representing Nashua Ward 9, Democrats Linda Harriott-Gathright, Marty Jack and Michael B. O'Brien Sr. still prevailed.
