MANCHESTER - Brayden Schenn schooled his former team on "Education Day" at Verizon Wireless Arena Wednesday morning, recording a hat trick to lead Adirondack to a 4-1 win over the Manchester Monarchs.

The attendance of 4,989 was mostly school kids in for the special morning game and they saw the trick from Schenn, who played seven games with the Monarchs in 2011 and would be in the NHL with Philadelphia if not for the lockout.

"It's always nice scoring goals, no matter who it's against," Schenn said. "I got to see some guys I know and played with. It makes it special and it's always fun playing here."

It wasn't as much fun for the Monarchs, who fell to 7-4-1 and watched a 1-1 third period tie evaporate in a flawed finale frame.

"I thought that our first two periods were high energy and we competed hard," said Monarchs head coach Mark Morris. "We just had way too many turnovers (in the third) to have any success. It's disappointing we ended the game that way because for two periods I thought we were pretty solid."

Schenn broke the 1-1 tie with a goal 20 seconds into the third. There was a flurry of action in the Manchester end and goalie Martin Jones made two saves before Schenn picked up a loose puck and wired a wrist shot over Jones' glove from the high slot.

The hat trick came at 5:36 to make it 3-1. Schenn stole a Thomas Hickey pass at the Manchester blue line and skated between the circles before sending a low shot past Jones inside the right post.

Less than a minute later Adirondack (6-6-0) made it 4-1 with a power-play goal. Matthew Ford's pass behind the net came to Garrett Roe on the left post and Roe roofed a backhand shot before Jones could get across. Jones was then pulled in favor of Peter Mannino, who closed the door and rode out the remainder of the game.

"They came more ready than we did in the third," Hickey said of the Phantoms. "It was pretty plain and simple that they had a higher energy level, higher focus level and that's why they won."

The Monarchs had led 1-0 in the game, scoring at 11:07 of the first period. Manchester maintained zone pressure after a power chance had expired and defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk sent a shot on net from the left point that was stopped by goalie Cal Heeter, but Brandon Kozun put the rebound home for his team-leading fifth goal.

The Phantoms scored at 14:32 of the first, using just three seconds of power-play time to even the game. Ben Holmstrom won the faceoff in the Manchester end and Schenn snapped a wrist shot over Jones' glove from the slot.

Manchester will attempt to regroup on the road this weekend, playing at Providence Friday (7:05 p.m.) and Bridgeport Saturday (7 p.m.).
