Monarchs blanked by Bridgeport

Bridgeport goalie Anders Nilsson stopped all 25 shots he faced as the Sound Tigers blanked the Manchester Monarchs, 4-0, in American Hockey League action before 4,570 fans in Connecticut Saturday night.

The loss was the second in as many nights for Manchester which suffered its first regulation road loss of the season Friday, 3-2, against the Providence Bruins in Rhode Island.

The setback leaves the Monarchs (7-6-0-1) in second place in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division with 15 points, one behind the front-running Worcester Sharks which lost to the Connecticut Whale Saturday, 2-1.

Bridgeport, which outshot Manchester, 29-25, led by two goals entering the third period, and Nilsson denied Monarch wingers eight times in the third period to secure the shutout. During the 20-minute span, the Sound Tigers Matt Watkins scored two goals to salt the game away.

Nino Niederreiter opened the game's scoring for the Sound Tigers at 13:45 of the first period with his eighth goal of season, with assists going to David Ullstrom and Jordan Hill.

Jon Landry doubled the hosts' advantage when he pounded in a power play goal at 8:41 of the second.

Watkins second goal, the game's final, was also a power play tally.

The teams combined for 14 penalties in the physical contest. Both teams had five power play opportunities, and Bridgeport capitalized on two of them.

Monarchs goalie Martin Jones finished with 25 saves.

Tanner Pearson, Marc-Andre Cliche and Thomas Hickey each had three shots on goal.

Manchester continues its road trip Tuesday when it motors to Portland, Maine, for a game with its division rival at 7 p.m.
