Planned self-storage facility approved by Derry board
The board gave conditional approval for the three-phase project, which will eventually include constructing self-storage buildings totaling 70,800-square feet on the 21-acre property in August. The mixed-use development at the site will also include the existing 3,000-square-foot office building.
At the August hearing, the board required owner Paul George to come back with more detailed architectural and lighting plans for the first phase of the project, which includes two self-storage buildings. Board members said they were satisfied with the lighting plan, with Chairman David Granese praising the use of energy-efficient LED lighting.
"Each one of the proposed buildings will have eight wall packs on the face of the building, and then there will be four other lights on utility poles throughout the property," said project engineer Jim Hanley. "The idea is to provide a minimal amount of light and not cast any light outside the property."
Hanley also said the existing landscaping along Rte. 28 and along the office building will remain, with the exception of three or four shrubs that will be relocated.
A new "Welcome to Derry" sign was also placed on the property. George said he welcomed the sign on his property near the Windham line.
Sheldon Wolfe of Rockingham Road said the development will provide a good gateway as travelers come into Derry.
"He has done a wonderful job there and he is an asset to the town," said Wolfe.
The self-storage facility will be managed from the existing office building on the property and will include a gate with a keypad and closed-circuit cameras monitoring the property.
