SNHU, St. Anselm poised for early basketball battles

Only three games into the schedule, the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team is unbeaten and ready for a serious test on the road. The Penmen won't travel far tonight.

SNHU and St. Anselm College continue their rivalry with a Northeast-10 contest at St. A's Stoutenburgh Gym in Goffstown. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.

The Penmen lead the all-time series, 29-26, but haven't won at the Hawks' Nest since the 2006-07 campaign.

Four players have averaged double-figure scoring for SNHU (3-0), led by freshman guard/forward Rodney Sanders at 11.7 points per game. Sanders, of Linden, N.J., has started all three games while shooting 53.8 percent from the field.

SNHU sophomore Elijah Bonsignore is averaging 11.3 points, while B.J. Cardarelli (10.3 ppg) and Manchester Central product Michael Stys (10.0) have been productive. Stys, who spent two seasons at the University of New Haven and sat out last year after transferring, scored 15 points in his SNHU debut against Wilmington, Del.

The Hawks (2-1) lost to Stonehill College in overtime, 81-73, for a heart-breaking opener in the Northeast-10 Conference last week. Sophomore Chris Santo had 16 points and nine boards for St. Anselm.

Freshman forward Mike McCahey of Clarkstown, N.Y., opened his college career with promising performances as the Hawks defeated Concordia (N.Y.) and Mercy, averaging 19.5 points, nine rebounds and two steals. The 6-foot-6 McCahey is the reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week.

Sophomore guard Roy Mabrey has netted 15 points per game, and junior guard Dino Mallios has chipped in 10.3 points per game.

Tonight's action begins with the SNHU-St. Anselm women's game at 5:30. SNHU (1-0) opened the year with a 65-59 overtime win at St. Michael's, led by Sloane Sorrell's 14 points and 13 rebounds. Senior guard Michelle DeRoma is coming off a 17-point effort at St. Michael's.

Sophomore guard Brooke Springfield, a Conant High of Jaffrey graduate, had seven points and six assists in the opener.

The Hawks (2-1) are led by junior Briana Jones (12.7 ppg) and sophomore Allie Jones (10.0 ppg), who has grabbed seven rebounds per game.

St. Anselm leads the all-time series, 40-14, but SNHU has won 11 of the previous 14 contests.

Admission for the doubleheader is $10 for adults. Seniors and teens are $3, and ages 12 and under are admitted free.
