PETERBOROUGH - While Black Friday is being promoted by the large retailers and the grassroots Plaid Friday is being promoted by locally owned stores, the day after Thanksgiving has also quietly become a day for artisans to tout their goods.
Today, a group of nine by nationally renowned local artists known as Three Squared are hosting their annual show at the Peterborough Historical Society. A craft show is also being held in the Peterborough Town House today and Saturday.
Three Squared, Marcia Herson, Bedford, Paysha White, Janet Hulings Bleicken, Lulu Fichter, Jordana Korsen, Jane El Simpson, Erin Sweeney, Kitty Cloud and Brian Richardson, offer a wide variety of work from pottery, hand-blown glass, jewelry, paintings and paper art.
"We each do very different things and have very different energies," Fichter said.
The show opens at the Peterborough Historical Society with a reception including light food and drinks from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The show continues Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fichter, who works out of her potter studio in West Peterborough, said the group of artists meets once a month and has been hosting a three-day holiday show for years.
Opening the day after Thanksgiving is a great way to participate in the local shopping movement, Plaid Friday, that the retailers in town are promoting, she said.
"There's definitely a connection between that weekend and our town. There's a big push to try to keep people here," Fichter said.
She said the holiday season is often a time for her to reconnect with her customers.
"I make one-of-a-kind things, so people come on Friday because they want the best things I have," she said. "There's a real sense of, 'Oh I haven't seen you in such a long time, come see my new work.' I know half the people that are shopping there. It's not like shopping, it's like a party."
