H.S. Football Turkey Bowl Roundup: Souhegan's Beliveau goes out a winner

Souhegan of Amherst senior quarterback Tyler Ford made sure his coach stepped down in style.

In the final game for longtime head coach Mike Beliveau, Ford passed for 249 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Sabers throttled host Merrimack, 41-14, on Thursday.

Ford also passed for two scores and caught another touchdown as the Sabers celebrated Beliveau's 18th season. Beliveau's teams made 14 trips to the playoffs and won four championships in Division III, most recently in 2010.

"It was really an emotional day but a happy day," Beliveau said.

Ford also rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns as several milestones and program records were established. Ford surpassed the 2,100-yard passing mark and 1,000-yard rushing mark as Souhegan (10-2 overall) moved the ball at will. Brandon Len caught touchdown passes of 20 yards and 31 yards, setting a school record with his 13th TD reception of the season. Souhegan led 29-0 at halftime and upped the score to 35-0 on an 8-yard TD run by Jacques Elias. It was 41-0 before Merrimack (0-11) finally got on the scoreboard.

Len finished with more than 150 yards receiving - and also threw a TD pass to Ford. Several ex-Sabers greeted Beliveau on the field. Beliveau's final message to his players?

"I said something to the guys that I hoped up summed up the whole career," Beliveau said. "I asked them, 'Did we make a family? Do we have a brotherhood for life? Did we make great memories together? They all gave resounding 'yes.' When I heard that, I told them, 'Gentlemen, my heart is full'."

Other Thanksgiving Day games played Thursday:

Nashua North 14, Nashua South 13: Brandon Martin fired an 8-yard touchdown pass to Christian Filonow with 1:31 remaining as the Titans completed a second-half comeback at Nashua's Stellos Stadium. Nashua North (5-6) trailed 13-0 in the third quarter before Martin, a junior, fired a long pass to Kyle Regan for a 50-yard touchdown play.

The game was scoreless until Nashua South quarterback Trevor Knight's 4-yard rush capped a scoring drive. On the Purple Panthers' next drive, Knight broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run. Nashua South finished the season at 6-6.

Portsmouth 27, Dover 14: Quarterback Donovan Phanor and the Division III champs kept on rolling at Tom Daubney Field in Portsmouth. Phanor scored twice on the ground and also threw a touchdown pass as the Clippers improved to 10-2 overall. Dover (3-8) had won the past three games against Portsmouth and leads the series, 4-3. The Seacoast schools are likely ending the holiday series, according to school officials.

Spaulding 38, Somersworth 22: Senior running back Tyrone Scott returned from an arm injury and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead host Spaulding of Rochester at Hugo Bolin Field. In preseason, Scott suffered a fracture against Somersworth. He rushed for more than 100 yards against the Hilltoppers on Thursday. Younger brother Trey Scott, a junior, also racked up more than 100 yards rushing and finished the year with 1,200-plus yards. Spaulding improved to 3-8 overall and leads the Thanksgiving series, 3-2. Somersworth, which lost to Monadnock of Swanzey in the Division V championship, ended the year at 8-2.
