Monarchs post overtime triumph over Springfield

The Manchester Monarchs registered a 4-3 shootout win over the host Springfield Falcons Saturday night.

Manchester improved to 9-6-2 and will host Portland today at 3 p.m. at Verizon Wireless Arena. Springfield fell to 10-2-4.

Captain Marc-Andre Cliche scored the deciding goal in the shootout, beating goalie Curtis McElhinney to give Manchester a 3-1 edge in the shootout through four rounds.

McElhinney had been sharp all game, including the close of regulation and overtime when the Monarchs applied steady pressure. McElhinney was AHL Player of the Week earlier in November and made 33 saves on Saturday.

Peter Manninno made 21 saves and came up big in the shootout by stopping three of four Falcon shooters.

Monarchs rookies Jordan Weal and Tyler Toffoli scored in the first two shootout rounds for Manchester. Nick Drazenovic scored in round three for Springfield while Monarch Thomas Hickey was stopped.

Mannino stuffed Ryan Johansen to open the fourth round and then Cliche won it.

The Monarchs opened the game with a recent trend that they'd like to shake, that of getting behind early.

Springfield took a 1-0 lead at 4:32 of the first period on a power-play goal from Johansen.

Manchester was able to tie the game with a power-play goal of its own at 8:47 when rookie Tanner Pearson scored his fourth of the season, putting home a rebound shot after McElhinney had made several saves during a flurry.

The Monarchs took a 2-1 lead at 9:31 of the first, again striking on the power play. This time it was defenseman Nick Deslauriers, who netted his second of the season with a blast from inside the blue line that made its way through traffic.

Deslauriers scored his first of the season on Friday night in the Monarchs' 4-3 overtime loss to Worcester.

Manchester extended to a 3-1 lead with yet another power-play goal in the first. Toffoli scored at 16:14 for his eighth of the year.

Toffoli missed Friday's game to attend the funeral service for his grandmother, who passed away on Tuesday.

The Falcons scored the lone goal of the second period to pull within one at 3-2. Michael Chaput set up Jake Hansen in the slot for the goal at 8:21.

Cam Atkinson tied the game for Springfield in the third period, scoring a power-play goal at 13:12 on a blast from the left circle to force the overtime session.
