Reed nets 17 as UNH women tip Cornell

Cari Reed scored a game-high 17 points, including two free throws with nine seconds remaining in regulation, to help the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team claim a 59-56 win over visiting Cornell University Sunday afternoon in Durham.

UNH moved to 3-1 overall this season while Cornell dropped to 3-3.

Elizabeth Belanger came up with 11 points and 11 rebounds to help the Wildcat cause. Taylor Flynn led Cornell with 15 points.

UNH led 39-29 with 14:21 left to play in the second half. Cornell took a 45-43 lead with 7:45 to play after going on a 9-0 run. The teams went back and forth until Lauren Wells gave UNH the lead for good at 57-56 with a hoop in the paint with 27 seconds remaining.

SNHU 56, Chestnut Hill 51: Sloane Sorrell scored 19 points and hauled in 11 rebounds as the Penmen moved to 3-0 on the year with a win at home in Manchester Sunday afternoon.

Victoria Wiseman and Rochester's Deborah LaValley each contributed eight points for SNHU, which led by as many as 17 early in the second half before Chestnut Hill climbed to within two points, 51-49, with 1:26 to play.

Lorreta Rocha hit a three with 1:03 left to make it a five-point advantage for Southern New Hampshire.

Women's hockey

Minnesota 4, New Hampshire 0: The Golden Gophers made it two straight over the host Wildcats in Durham this weekend, following up their 10-2 Saturday win with a 4-0 triumph Sunday. New Hampshire is 6-9-1 and Minnesota is 16-0-0.

Minnesota claimed the win Sunday despite a career-high 39 saves from UNH sophomore goalie Moe Bradley.

Lee Stecklein, Rachel Bona, Milica McMillen and Amanda Kessel scored for Minnesota. Amanda Leveille picked up the shutout win in the Minnesota goal, making 16 saves.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday when they host Northeastern at the Whittemore Center at 2 p.m.
