Bawdy show to benefit AIDS Services in Keene
"I love that tie in and we'll figure out some way to highlight the fact that it's World Aids Day," said Susan MacNeil, executive director of AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region.
The organization supports, among other activities, the Cleve Jones Wellness House in Gilsum for those living with AIDS, HIV and hepatitis C.
It's the tenth year in a row that the local drag queen performers known as The Rainbow Ladies have come together to support the organization during the holiday season. It is also a year-end celebration for AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region, she said.
"It's just wonderful each holiday we can come together with a couple hundred people that support us and these performers that come each year for free," MacNeil said.
Headlining the show is Mama Mayhem, aka Mark Herman-May.
"We will support just about any cause that comes to us," Herman-May said. "But the performers, we're gay, so to us this is closer to home. The older ones of us have lost family and friends to AIDS so for us it's a way of continuing their legacy."
Herman-May said the audience can expect a fun night of traditional drag numbers with the addition of holiday songs.
"For Christmas we usually try to throw in some traditional Christmas music, but when you see a six and half foot drag queen lip-syncing 'Santa Baby' it changes it a little bit," he said. "And a lot of the show is the bantering between the performers and the audience."
The show is recommended for 18 and up for off-color humor, Herman-May said.
"I'd like to think of us as being bawdy humor. Some of the numbers are a little risqué and on stage I don't have the cleanest mouth. But it's really just fun," Herman-May said. "We advertise as adult entertainment, but certainly we have had people bring their older teen children."
The show is planned for Saturday at the American Legion on Court Street in Keene.
The audience is encouraged to bring their own "holiday feast." Drinks must be purchased from the bar. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and $100 for table of eight with paid reservation. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m.
Tables must be reserved in advance with VISA/MC by calling 357-6855.
Holiday parties welcome.
