NH Sen. Ayotte voices budget dismay on Sunday morning TV show
WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., debated the current budget negotiations taking place between President Barack Obama and the Republicans in Congress during her Sunday morning appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" with Candy Crowley.
"Let me just say I was disappointed by the President's proposal," Ayotte said. "I think it's essentially a rerun of his budget proposal. It's a massive tax increase."
Ayotte squared off with Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., for the discussion on the effort to keep the country from going off the so-called fiscal cliff. Warner said Obama's plan to raise tax rates on the rich is what's needed to keep the country from falling into a deeper recession.
Ayotte said the plan will do nothing about the looming entitlement problems.
"We don't want to be like Greece," she said.
Ayotte said Obama's proposals don't do anything for the spending imbalance. Without reforming the entitlements, Medicare and Social Security will become insolvent and the country bankrupted, she said.
Warner said there needs to be a mix of spending cuts and tax revenue in order to solve the long term budget problems.
Both Ayotte and Warner agree a budget deal between the House Republicans and the President has to happen.
Ayotte also expressed her disappointment in Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, for her role in the Benghazi attack aftermath. Ayotte met with Rice last week and remains unhappy with the information she received.
"I remain very troubled not only myself. For example, the ranking Republican, Susan Collins, of the Homeland Security Committee raised some very important questions after meeting with her," Ayotte said.
