NH Attorney General: Lee police shoot suicidal man
LEE - State and local officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a resident injured Monday.
Police responded to 289 Lee Hook Road after Mary Amazeen reported just after midnight that her husband, Steve Amazeen, 45, fired a weapon in their home and was possibly suicidal.
Officers met Steve Amazeen on the road near his home.
After a brief encounter, Amazeen was shot by “one or more officers,” according to Senior Assistant Attorney General Susan Morrell.
Police from Lee, Barrington, Durham, Newfields and Newmarket were among the law enforcement agencies that responded.
Amazeen underwent surgery and was in stable condition Monday night at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.
Morrell said she could not comment on the type of weapon Amazeen fired, whether he was armed when police arrived or if he threatened anyone.
She also would not say how many officers discharged their weapons or how many times Amazeen was shot.
Morrell previously said it could “be surmised” the disturbance involved a domestic issue. Amazeen’s wife was unharmed, and Morrell said she believes the couple’s young daughter was present, but unharmed.
She refused to say if police had been called to the home before for a domestic disturbance, or whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the incident.
“All of those circumstances surrounding the shooting are part of the investigation,” Morrell said.
She said it is standard protocol for members of the Attorney General’s Office and the State Police Major Crime Unit to investigate when an officer uses deadly force.
She said state officials are only investigating the shooting itself.
It is up to Lee police and the Strafford County Attorney’s Office to determine whether any charges should be filed against Amazeen, she said.
