Windham man pleads guilty to pair of drug charges
BRENTWOOD - A Windham man received a suspended prison sentence and seven days in county jail after pleading guilty to drug charges that arose after police found a 20-year-old woman dead at his home last December.
Joseph Ida, 24, pleaded guilty to possession of controlled drug and received a suspended 1½- to 3-year prison sentence for allegedly having a quantity of diazepam.
He also pleaded guilty to a second drug charge for having a spoon with heroin residue on it, court records indicate.
Police were called to Ida's home on Dec. 21 and found that a 20-year-old University of New Hampshire student, Ellie Morin, had died.
Ida was not charged in her death but was later indicted on drug charges. As part of a negotiated plea deal, Ida received a 12-month jail sentence on one of the charges, which was largely suspended except for seven days, according to court records.
Ida was ordered to report to the Rockingham County jail on Nov. 18, according to court papers.
Judge Marguerite Wageling also ordered Ida to undergo drug and alcohol treatment and remain on good behavior.
Prosecutors can seek to impose the suspended prison sentence over the next three years if Ida violates any of the terms of his probation, court records say.
Had he been convicted at trial, Ida could have faced up to 7½ to 15 years in state prison.
Ida was initially facing a charge of manufacturing a controlled drug for allegedly making the drug Dimethyltryptamine, but no indictment was brought forward with that charge, according to court records.
Police said they found a petroleum solvent called VM&P Naptha, drain cleaner "and a substantial amount of hardware used in the manufacturing of Dimethyltryptamine," at Ida's home.
Ida had a Nov. 6, 2006 conviction in Salem for possession of a controlled drug, according to indictments.
