Wolfeboro selectman donates $5,000 stipend for Christmas party

WOLFBORO - A town selectman and his wife have donated $5,000 - the equivalent of his annual selectmen stipend - so that town employees can have a Christmas Party in a local inn.

"We like to help out the town," said Selectmen Q. David Bowers when asked about the unsolicited donation on Monday.

The board of selectmen gratefully acknowledged the gift from David and Christine Bowers at its Nov. 26 regular board meeting.

Town Manager David Owen said the party will be held at the Wolfeboro Inn on Dec. 14 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Town employees and their significant others are welcome to attend.

Bowers said the town has about 62 employees.

"I love Wolfeboro," said Bowers. He said the employees don't usually plan anything formal for Christmas.

"We thought, this year, wouldn't it be nice to have a Christmas party," he said.

The amount donated equals Bowers annual selectmen's salary. "I get paid that amount so I just gave my salary back."

This is Bowers' second year as a selectman.

Owen said the staff is delighted.

"They are extremely pleased," he said.

In the past, the employees have had functions or potluck gatherings, but the donation will pay for a "very nice catered event" at the Wolfeboro Inn.

The party will include a sit-down meal for employees and guests. Initially, Bowers' donation was intended to benefit town employees in an unspecified, unrestricted fashion, and when Owen suggested a portion of the funds be used for a Christmas party, Bowers thought it was a good idea.
