UNH football coach McDonnell named AFCA Regional Coach of the Year
The University of New Hampshire's Sean McDonnell was named the American Football Coaches Association 2012 Regional Coach of the Year on Monday. McDonnell was one of five Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) coaches selected by AFCA members who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions.
It is the third career AFCA Regional Coach of the Year award for McDonnell, who was previously feted in 2004 and 2005. The 14th-year head coach guided the Wildcats to a co-CAA championship for the second time in his career (2005) with a 6-2 league record, and the 'Cats closed out the season with an 8-4 overall mark following Saturday's 23-7 loss at Wofford College in the second round of the NCAA Division I FCS Championship.McDonnell won his 100th game on Oct. 6 at Georgia State.
St. Anselm sophomore Roy Mabrey on Monday was named Northeast-10 Player of the Week for a second straight week. He averaged 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a pair of wins, over Merrimack and Franklin Pierce. He scored a career-high 32 points in the win over Merrimack.
The conference also honored Hawk freshman Mike McCahey as the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. He averaged 21.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in those two Hawk victories.
Nashua North product Ryan Gauthier, of Daniel Webster College, is the New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week. Gauthier, a freshman guard, averaged 19 points per game along with 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in a pair of victories at the Colby College Classic this past weekend as the Eagles captured the title.
Plymouth State senior Alex Cottle was named the MASCAC Player of the Week. He scored two goals and added three assists in a pair of league wins for PSU. Cottle shares the team scoring lead with eight points. Also, Plymouth State goalie Jack Astedt was selected to the league's weekly honor roll. Astedt made 35 saves in a 3-2 win over Salem State, then nine saves in a 5-1 victory over Worcester State.
Plymouth State is 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in conference games.
On the women's side, PSU freshman Alysha Raimo was named to the ECAC Women's East weekly honor roll. She scored a pair of goals during the week, including one in the Panthers' 2-0 win over Nichols, the team's first of the year.
St. Anselm sophomore goalie Janice Michaud is the ECAC Women's East Goalie of the Week. Michaud helped Saint Anselm to a 1-0-1 week as she totaled 40 saves and allowed only one goal for a .976 save percentage and a 0.48 goals-against average.
St. Anselm junior Nick Dries was named ECAC Men's East Goalie of the Week. Dries totaled 41 saves for a .976 save percentage and a 0.50 GAA as he led the Hawks to a 2-0-0 week.
St. Anselm beat Assumption, 7-0, and New England College, 4-1.
