Harbor Homes wins grant to help with veteran housing

NASHUA - Harbor Homes was recently awarded a $100,000 affordable housing grant through the TD Charitable Foundation's Housing for Everyone grant competition. The grant will be used to support the building of Harbor Homes' newest Veterans FIRST housing facility on Somerville Street in Manchester.

After completion, 26 homeless veterans and their families will have access to one- and two-bedroom transitional living and permanent supportive housing apartments within a brand new three-story building. While living in the facility, veterans receive case management, transportation, employment services, and other supportive services customized to meet the unique needs of each household. Working closely with the Manchester VA Medical Center and other health and human service providers, veterans usually graduate from the program in two years or less, moving onto independent, industrious living.

This is the third facility of its kind within the Harbor Homes' Veterans FIRST program. Buckingham Place and Dalianis House, located in Nashua, provide 60 units of transitional housing for homeless veterans and have a waiting list.

"As many more of our veterans are returning from battle, they find themselves facing economic challenges along with personal struggles, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There is a high demand for veteran housing and supportive services, capacity continues to be limited, and our waiting lists are expanding.

Twenty-five organizations were awarded a $100,000 grant for a total grant donation of $2.5 million in 2012.
