Nashua officials to consider downtown roadway study
On Wednesday, the aldermanic Finance Committee is expected to vote on whether to award a contract to Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. of Bedford.
"The purpose of the study is to identify potential strategies to improve roadway and intersection traffic flow and mobility within the study area, strengthen pedestrian and bicycle connections with the core downtown area, and enhance accessibility for residents and businesses," says a memo written to Mayor Donnalee Lozeau, who also serves as chairman of the Finance Committee.
The study, according to the memo, will take into account the changes anticipated because of the Broad Street Parkway project.
The idea of a downtown roadway circulation study was first floated last summer when the board approved about $2.4 million in escrow requests. The recommended $75,000 for the study was included in those escrow funds.
The study will examine the benefits and disadvantages of having so many one-way side streets, and determine whether another traffic pattern might be worthwhile, Lozeau has said.
According to the proposed contract: "The project study area is generally limited by the Nashua River to the north, Spruce Street to the east, East and West Hollis Street to the south and Pine Street to the west."
In a final report, which could be completed in about 16 weeks, several improvement strategies will be highlighted and recommended, the contract says.
Wednesday's meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Nashua City Hall.
Roadwork under way
Meanwhile, traffic patterns will be altered beginning Thursday on Pine and Palm Streets, where work has already begun for the Broad Street Parkway project.
Pine Street will now become one-way traffic southbound from Central Street to Kinsley Street. Palm Street will remain one-way traffic northbound from Kinsley Street to Central Street; however, northbound traffic flow past West Hollis Street is now possible with new signalized intersections.
