MANCHESTER - The woman who drove Myles Webster to the West Side the night Webster is accused of shooting Manchester Police officer Daniel Doherty testified Thursday morning that Webster fired a gun while in her vehicle that day.

Jennifer Whitfield told jurors in the attempted-murder trial of Webster, 23, in Hillsborough County Superior Court North that Webster, whom she knew as "Zo," fired a gun after an argument.

She said she was driving, another woman was in the front passenger seat and "Zo" was in the rear passenger-side seat, alongside another woman.

Whitfield said "Zo" was angry because he was protecting the women and said his life should be taken seriously, too.

After that, said Whitfield, she heard "a bang, a gunshot." She said she heard a second gunshot as they were passing under the Granite Street Bridge.

The quartet then proceeded to the Rite-Aid store at McGregor Square and bought a pack of cigarettes for one of the women, and when Whitfield pulled out of the lot and stopped at the traffic light, Webster exited the car and walked off toward Amory Street and Whitfield continued on her way to visit a friend on Dubuque Street. She said she didn't see Webster again that night.

During cross examination by defense attorney Robert Swales, Whitfield acknowledged she is a reluctant witness who has been held in jail to ensure her appearance in court.

Whitfield was arrested in Nashua on a charge of unauthorized use of a rental vehicle two days after the shooting and returned to Manchester for questioning.

Swales was questioning an obviously nervous and uncomfortable Whitfield when the lunch recess was called.

Earlier, police officer Warren Tanner testified about finding a gun next to the fence separating 141 and 145 Putnam St., where Webster was arrested.

Officer Steven Flynn testified about his discovery of a black jacket in a trash bin next to a shed in the yard where Webster was arrested the night of the shooting.
