Middleton tax rate up 21% over last year

MIDDLETON - With another tough budget season ahead, residents are facing an increase in their tax rate of 21 percent.

On Nov. 29, the N.H. Department of Revenue Administration set the overall tax rate at $24.60 per $1,000 of local valuation. It is $5.14 - or 21 percent - greater than last year's rate of $19.46.

The tax rate is broken down as follows: $7.18 for town, $12.78 for local school, $2.19 for state schools, $2.45 for county. Last year, tax rates were broken down as follows: $5.02 for the town, $9.74 for local schools, $2.30 for state schools and $2.40 for the county.

The school portion rose by 31 percent - or $3.04 per $1,000 - due to a decrease in state revenue coupled with $450,000 for tuition, $69,000 in debt payment and $15,000 to offset special education costs, according to Jeanette Lemay, business administrator for School Administrative Unit 61 which oversees Farmington and Middleton students.

As Middleton pays tuition to send its children to Farmington schools, Lemay said part of the increase in taxes stemmed from a rise in the student population, which fluctuates from year to year.

Town officials could not be reached to explain why the town's portion rose by 43 percent - or $2.16 per $1,000 - or what the overall rise will mean to the ongoing budget season, which culminates at Town Meeting in March.

Residents of the Sunrise Lake Village District pay an additional 84 cents, which is 3 cents - or 3.6 percent - less than last year's district rate of 87 cents.

Overall, district residents pay $25.44 per $1,000. As there was very little development in town, the overall valuation of the town increased by $1,199,193 - or 0.65 percent - from $182,845,247 to $184,044,440.
