P-Bruins get past Monarchs

It didn't take Bryan Rodney long to make an impact with the Manchester Monarchs.

Rodney, a 28-year-old defenseman who was added to Manchester's roster on Monday, collected two goals in his first game with the team, but the Monarchs dropped a 3-2 decision to the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence on Friday night.

Rodney, who scored in each of the first two periods, spent a majority of the 2011-12 season with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch. He collected five goals and 15 assists in 41 games with Syracuse.

Rodney has played in 34 National Hockey League games with the Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers, and is a two-time AHL All-Star (2010 and 2011).

Former Providence College standout Kyle MacKinnon scored twice for the Bruins, who split four previous meetings with the Monarchs this season. They were the first two goals MacKinnon has scored this season.

It was the 2-2 game entering the third. Providence took its only lead when Torey Krug scored 6:02 into the period.

Providence improved its record to 10-8-2 with the victory. The Monarchs fell to 10-9-3.

Rodney gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead 10;49 into the opening period, but Providence tied the game on a MacKinnon goal with 42 seconds left in the first. Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli assisted on Rodney's goal.

Rodney's second goal gave the Monarchs a 2-1 lead 9:04 into the second and came while the teams were skating four on four. Assists went to Andrei Loktionov and Stefan Legein.

MacKinnon's second goal made it a 2-2 contest at 16:18 of the second.

Manchester received 27 saves from Martin Jones. Niklas Svedberg stopped 28 shots for Providence. It was Svedberg's third victory over the Monarchs this season.

The Monarchs pulled Jones with 1:28 left but failed to force overtime.

Each team was scoreless in five power-play opportunities.

Manchester will face the Connecticut Whale tonight (7:05) at Verizon Wireless Arena.
