Claremont firm fined after workplace fatality

CLAREMONT - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's office in Concord has fined a River Road company $7,000 in connection with a June workplace death.

Scott Bates, 41, of Claremont was pinned under a trailer at a facility operated by Structal Bridges, a division of Canam Steel Corp., on River Road around 1:30 p.m. June 8. He was taken to Valley Regional Hospital but died of his injuries.

"Employees were not protected from the hazard of being struck by or crushed by the tires/wheels of a steerable trailer (dolly) after the girder was set in place, prior to it being chained," according to the OSHA citation issued Dec. 5 by Rosemarie Ohar, area director for the OSHA office in Concord.

In the citation, Ohar said the violation was corrected during one of the inspections of the facility between June 8, the day of the accident, and Oct. 10. The company was told it could correct the hazard by chocking, restraining or blocking the tires on the trailers to limit movement.

"A second means of control is to have procedures in place to ensure that the air for the air brakes on the steerable trailer is always disconnected until loading and binding is completely secure," Ohar said in the report.

Canam Steel Corp. has 15 days from the issuance of the citation to accept or contest the violation, OSHA said.
