MANCHESTER - That's one hungry Wolf Pack.

The Laconia-Winnisquam of Tilton hockey team, winless the past two seasons, opened the Division III schedule with a 7-1 victory against host Manchester West at JFK Memorial Coliseum on Thursday.

Dakota Tyno needed only nine seconds for his first goal, and the junior scoring machine finished with five goals as the Wolf Pack took advantage of young Manchester West, which featured several skaters making their varsity debut. Matt Missert also scored in the first minute for Laconia-Winnisquam.

"We've been waiting. The whole idea was to come out and jump on them right away, maybe discourage them right off the bat. It just happened to work out that way," Wolf Pack second-year head coach T.J. Galligan said.

The Blue Knights came alive after the ominous start, holding the visitors scoreless for the next 28-plus minutes on the game clock. Both goalies were superb. West's Josh Gagne made nine saves in the first period and five more in the second period. He finished with 21 saves.

Laconia-Winnisquam upped the score to 3-0 on Dylan Martell's goal with 4:21 remaining in the second period. West broke the shutout in the third period, finally beating red-hot goalie Brayden Harriman (27 saves). Freshman Jeff Bell set up a play for Alex Wright, who buried a shot from inside the right circle.

Freshman Talia Cote, a West defenseman, made a strong varsity debut. Jon Roth, Shane Perkins and Joey Cronin are the lone seniors for the Blue Knights, who showed plenty of bright spots.

"We got off to a slow start. They looked sluggish, nervous, whatever the case," West coach Matt Thompson said, "but I like the way they finished the first (period) and how they played in the second period. It's a big improvement from last year."

Tyno scored four times in a wild third period. On his third goal of the night, a hat trick, one fan from the Lakes Region tossed a baseball hat onto the ice. Jackson Weeks assisted Tyno on a goal that pushed the lead to 5-1. Derek Dutton picked up a pair of third-period assists. After the final buzzer, Laconia-Winnisquam swarmed its goalie during a well-deserved celebration.

"First win in three seasons. Our seniors were freshmen the last time they won a game. It's been a long drought," Galligan said.

The Wolf Pack host Portsmouth (0-1) on Saturday at 4:40 p.m. at Laconia Ice Arena. With another win, the Pack might dare to dream of a playoff season ahead.

"I'm not going to say anything about that. This is our first win in 50 games. We'll enjoy this one and get ready for practice tomorrow morning at 5:30. One day at a time," Galligan said.

West plays at John Stark/Hopkinton on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at New England College in Henniker.
