Voynov's goal powers Monarchs past Phantoms

Slava Voynov's late third period goal snapped a tie and lifted the Manchester Monarchs to a 3-2 American Hockey League victory over the Adirondack Phantoms at Glens Falls, N.Y., Saturday night.

The victory pushes the struggling Monarchs, who are fourth in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division standings, to 12-11-3.

Manchester trailed by a goal after two periods as the Phantoms capitalized on goals from Mike Testwuide and Tyler Brown to take a 2-1 lead. Brown's strike came on a power play.

But the Monarchs Tanner Pearson knotted the game at 2-2 with his sixth of the season at 8:01 of the third to change the complexion of the game.

Manchester slapped 14 shots at Adirondack goalie Cal Heeter in the third, but was unable to score again until Voynov fired home an unassisted goal, his sixth of the year, at 16:28.

Manchester goalie Peter Mannino, playing in his eighth game of the season, faced 34 shots and turned aside all but two. He was drum tight over the game's final 10 mintues to secure the win. The Phantoms had nine shots in the final period.

The game was scoreless after the first 20-minute session.

Manchester's Linden Vey finally found the range and opened the game's scoring at 11:37 of the second with assists going to Pearson and Tyler Toffoli. Vey has seven goals this season.

Heeter finished with 33 saves.

Manchester had three power play opportunites but failed to score with the man advantage. Adirondack was one-for-two.

The Phantoms are in last place in the Northeast Division with a 10-14-1 mark.

The Monarchs complete a three-games-in-three-days weekend stretch when they return to the Verizon Wireless Arena this afternoon for a 3 p.m. matinee with the Springfield Falcons. Springfield leads the Northeast standings.
