Derry wants Pinkerton poll to be permanent location
DERRY - Town officials are gearing up for the March town election and are hoping that town polling locations will remain consistent for at least the next four years.
Over the past several years, there has been confusion caused by differing polling locations during town, state, and presidential elections.
"Pinkerton Academy is the wild card in all this in keeping the same polling locations in all elections," said Town Administrator John Anderson.
Anderson and Town Clerk Denise Neale are looking to keep the same polling locations the town had for the recent presidential election, with precincts 1 and 3 at Pinkerton Academy, Precinct 2 at Cavalry Baptist Church, and Precinct 4 at the Hood Middle School.
"I think during the presidential election, Precinct 1 had the toughest time because they are used to regular elections when they go to Hood," said councilor Brian Chirichiello.
Anderson said he has made the request for the permanent polling location to Pinkerton Academy Headmaster Mary Anderson, who will meet with trustees later this month.
"We hope to have their decision by the end of the month," said Anderson. "Ultimately, it is the Town Council who decides where the polling locations are."
Next year's town election is scheduled for March 12. The filing period for candidates is from Jan. 23 through Feb. 1, with Feb. 5 the last day for citizens to petition for warrant articles, according to Anderson. The last day to register to vote for the town election is March 2, and March 11 will be the last day for in-person absentee voting.
Positions on the ballot in March include districts 2 and 4 town councilors, one at-large council position, two trustees for the Derry Public Library, two trustees for the Taylor Public Library, and one trustee of the trust fund, and the town clerk. There look to be at least two open positions during the March election. Anderson said trustee of the trust fund Mike Gill has indicated he is not running for reelection, and District 4 Councilor Chirichiello has repeatedly indicated that he will not be running for reelection.
"I'm retiring," he said.
