NHIAA Sports Roundup: Salem, Concord skate to overtime tie

Cody Soucy scored two goals including the game-tying goal in the third period as Salem and Concord skated to a Division I, 2-2 overtime draw at the Everett Arena in Concord Wednesday.

Kyle Svenson assisted Soucy on both Salem goals.

Tallies from Connor Bardwell and Adam Godbout gave the Crimson Tide a 2-1 advantage in the second period.

Blue Devils goalie Nick Pahir made 21 saves, and Salem moved to 1-1-1 in the early season.

Concord freshman goalie Ben Nelson made 27 stops in his varsity debut. Concord is 1-0-1.

Merrimack 8, Lebanon 1: After surrendering an early goal, Merrimack errupted for eight unanswered strikes at Manchester's West Side Arena. The win was the third straight for the Tomahawks.

Dom Valluzzi led the Merrimack offense with two goals and two assists. Connor Powell also scored twice.

The Tomahawks built a 4-1 first period lead behind goals from Jason Fortin, Aidan O'Brien, Powell and Josh Roy. Shane Foye joined Valluzzi and Powell with second period goals.

Ryan White netted the game's first goal for Lebanon (1-2).

Both teams used reserve goalies through the scoreless third period.

Exeter 4, Bishop Guertin 3: At Tyngsborough, Mass., Ben Smith netted a hat trick and the Blue Hawks outlasted the Cardinals at Skate III Arena. Exeter led 3-0 early in the third period before Ben Hadley and Chris Arling whittled Bishop Guertin's deficit to one goal, 3-2. Smith and Arling traded goals to round out the scoring.

Willie Akeen was exceptional in the Exeter goal making 46 saves. BG's Griffin Scanlon faced 21 shots and turned aside 17.

Manchester West 6, Portsmouth 4: Alex Wright scored four goals, including an empty netter in the third period, and host Manchester West earned its first victory in Division III at the JFK Coliseum. Wright scored both West goals in the second period, and the teams were knotted at 2-apiece entering the third. Zach Allard provided the go-ahead goal for the Blue Knights (1-2), who got another big game from Josh Gagne (37 saves) in net. Aaron Rancourt had a hat trick for Portsmouth (1-2).

Berlin 4, Kennett 0: Goalie Brendan Williams stopped 13 shots and Berlin received goals from four different skaters as the Mountaineers shut out the visiting Eagles at the Notre Dame Arena. Justin Vien, Connor Jewett, Mike Lemoine and Cody Fauteux slipped shots past Kennett goalie Josh Kondrat who made 45 saves. Berlin is undefeated after three games.

Souhegan 9, ConVal 2: Matt Wilson scored four goals and Mike Hayden added two as the Sabers won their third game of the season in Winchendon, Mass. Souhegan led 3-0 after the first period and 7-1 after two. Sabers goalie Ryan Peterson notched the victory by making 17 saves. both ConVal goals were scored by Eric Ledger.

Dover 3, Oyster River 1: At Dover, Mitchell Welch scored twice, including the game-winner in the third period to lift the Green Wave (3-1) past the Bobcats (2-1).

Manchester Central 8, Nashua South 0: At Nashua, Manchester Central goalie Ian Beliveau made a half dozen saves and reserve goalie Tyler Cormellier skated the game's final minutes to team for the shutout at the Conway Arena. Central led 2-0 after one period and 3-0 after two before pouring in five goals during the final 15 minutes for the 8-0 score. Trevor Malmgren scored two goals as seven different Little Green skaters found the back of the net. South's A.J. Bender made 28 saves.

Trinity 4, St. Thomas 1: Kyle Valliere scored twice and assisted on another as the Pioneers (2-1) scored four times over the final two periods to pull away from the Saints (2-1-1). Mitch Myers and Tyler Tambouris also scored for Trinity, while Ryan Slatky turned aside 23 shots in goal.

Londonderry 4, Nashua North 0: At Salem, Eric Coburn scored twice and Jason Parker and Brett Evangelista once each as the Lancers improved to 2-1 at the Salem Ice Center. Londonderry goal Joe McGrath turned aside 15 shots en route to the shutout. North goalie Jake Genest made 29 saves.
